The FUSION Programme and Partnership

FUSION is InterTradeIreland's all-island technology transfer initiative that gives companies access to the wealth of expertise and facilities in our universities and colleges across the island of Ireland, allowing them to make strategic advances in innovation. The FUSION programme initially develops and facilitates partnerships between companies with a technology need on one side of the border, and colleges or universities that can provide the required specialist expertise on the other side. The partners work collectively to plan a specific project that will solve a technology need within the company. A high calibre graduate is then employed to spearhead the project for a period of up to 2 years. The graduate acts as the link and agent of technology transfer between the university and the company. In this instance Bell Architects Ltd and University College Dublin have partnered to carry out the project described below.

Fusion Project Objective

To create a design tool that acts as an aid for assisting architects at Bell Architects Ltd to assess design and integrate cost efficient renewable energy options in building energy proposals.

Bell Architects Ltd

Bell Architects (BA) Ltd. was established in 2003, and since then has grown to be one of the pre-eminent environmental/ecological design practices in Northern Ireland. The company have appointed a member of staff as the Company Supervisor on the project.

University College Dublin

University College Dublin (UCD) can trace its origins back to 1854 and is located on a 148 hectare site 4km south of Dublin city. The university comprises of 35 Schools which are organised according to discipline into 5 Colleges. UCD, through its knowledge and expertise, will provide specialist input, where required to the FUSION project. Further information about University College Dublin is available at www.ucd.ie.

Graduate - Building Systems Innovator - Renewable Energy Specialist

Reporting to the Company Supervisor, you will be employed by Bell Architects Ltd to lead the FUSION project. You will be responsible for ensuring that it is brought to a successful conclusion with the support from your supervisors. This is an exciting opportunity for a graduate to gain excellent industrial experience through a structured and planned programme of work. In addition to the daily support of a Company Supervisor, a dedicated member of University College Dublin with expertise in the project area will support the project. Additional support will also be given to the Graduate by a FUSION Consultant responsible for ensuring that all projects run according to schedule.

The project will fast track your career opportunities and help you to develop an understanding of the commercial reality of business management. At the end of the project there is an excellent opportunity for permanent employment with the Company.

All Graduates on the FUSION Programme, have the advantage of being a part of a wider network of FUSION graduates with a clear plan for career development. A percentage of the Graduate’s time is allocated to personal development with the additional benefit of up to €1,125 allocated for training and development. This may be used for attendance at training courses, conferences, seminars and exhibitions.

Advanced Management Diploma

All FUSION Graduates are expected to attend management training, designed specifically for FUSION Graduates and delivered by Smurfit Graduate School of Business in UCD. Its aims are to enhance Graduates’ personal, professional and managerial capabilities so that they can complete their FUSION Projects successfully and to equip them with the necessary skills for leadership roles in business. There will be a series of five, two-day workshops, however, a substantial part of the qualification will be work based. In addition, on successful completion of their training, each Graduate will obtain a Post Graduate Diploma in Management Practice which will be accredited by UCD.

Location

The successful candidate will be based at Bell Architects Ltd, 65-67 Main St., Ballymoney, BT53 6AN, NI. The Graduate will also travel independently on occasions between Bell Architects Ltd and University College Dublin and between Bell Architects Ltd and UCD. Independent travel to other locations will also be required occasionally as the job dictates.

Qualifications and Experience

Essential

Candidates must possess

1. Min 2.1 Honours Degree in either Engineering, Building Physics or Architecture or a closely related discipline.

And

2. Candidates should be able to demonstrate interest and experience in building energy either through prior project work and/or relevant work experience.

And

3. To be considered for this position, you must be eligible to work in Northern Ireland

Desirable

1. An advanced Degree specialising in any aspect of renewable energy systems relevant to building energy applications

FUSION Graduates who have completed the FUSION Post Graduate Diploma in Management need not apply.

Applications will also be considered from those candidates with relevant formal qualifications considered to be of an equivalent or higher standard to those stated. Applicants who do not possess one of the above formal qualifications and who consider that they have a relevant equivalent qualification must provide the necessary evidence in their application form.
